You do the math(s)

Twang-y spaghetti western guitars, chiming glocks and sweeping Spector-esque strings combine to beguiling effect on this debut single from the highly fancied Cherry Ghost. Effectively a one man band (a la Smog) Cherry Ghost have already appeared on the influential "Later with Jools Holland" – quite a feat for a new band who have yet to achieve even cult status.

Main-man Simon Aldred possesses a Marmite like voice (you'll either love it or hate it) that bears a perverse resemblance at various points to both R.E.M's Michael Stipe and Starsailor's James Walsh. It took me a couple of plays to fully appreciate the majesty of "Mathematics" but once its twinkling melody had embedded itself in my brain I was smitten. Musically this odd amalgam of lushly produced country and chamber pop conjures up romantic images in my head of couples waltzing in the desert by moonlight. Hopefully the band/project will deliver further gems on their forthcoming debut album.
