Neil McSweeney- Postcards

Debut single Postcards from Sheffield born Neil McSweeney is one of the first singer songwriter releases from up and coming record label KIDS. Sporting the likes of iLiKETRAiNS and the Wombats, KIDS have found another cracking star in the form of McSweeney, at least if this single is anything to go by that is.

Short and sweet, postcards end perhaps prematurely, with B-side 'My design' not of the same high standard- disappointing really as the release is an uplifting, powerful, eye catching debut. He isn't such a hit on his local live circuit it would appear, as internet forums have referred undoubtedly unfairly to McSweeney as the "Sheffielder most likely to kill himself" and "the most miserable man alive", both of which are laughable statements- ever heard of Nick Drake? But Neil isn't the Arctic Monkeys or other Northern hits Maximo Park and Milburn- he is a solo artist in a world of his own, allowing through postcards, his audience to join him, if only for a little while. Sheffield perhaps isn't quite ready for this new development.

Early plays from Radio One DJ Zane Lowe and a live performance on the Steve Lamacq show has increased both his reputation and profile, allowing his unique folksy solo style to shine on commercial radio. McSweeney is supporting ex-lamb singer Lou Rhodes on tour and further dates are to be announced. One to look out for in the future as it appears ironically, with his out of date style, the Northern live circuit isn't quite ready for him.
