Cover of Flaming Lips by US artist.

Gretchen Lieberum is a rather elusive act considering the single arrives with no artwork, band info or press release. However a quick gander on the web informs me that Gretchen Lieberum is a solo artist from Los Angeles, primarily influenced by Soul and Jazz.

The single 'Do You Realize' is immediately familiar thanks to the original by Flaming Lips and recently heard on a major car advert. A piano led song; 'Do You Realize' is a more sparse and languorous version than the Flaming Lips anthemic presentation. The stripped piano sound fits elegantly alongside the very maudlin and frankly beautifully depressing lyrics about death, such as "do you realise that happiness makes you cry, do you realise that everyone you know will someday die".

'Paper Tigers' is, presumably, an original composition and although still rather slow in pace there is more of a jazzy intro and a trip-hop sound, which manages to offset the sombre tone of its predecessor. However the song is much less startling and memorable, meaning it remains to be seen if Gretchen Lieberum's own compositions will be as arresting as her work using others' material as a basis.
