Unsigned band offer a decent single, but nothing explosive.
Having received welcoming reviews from both the NME and BBC, Reading's 'The Skies' are beginning to turn a few heads in the industry. 'Bring It On' is the debut release for the still as yet unsigned quintet, and has already charted at No.26 on the HMV Digital chart, making them the only unsigned band in the chart at the moment.
Opening with a swell of drums, guitar and vocalist Rikki Lee repeating "Do it", rather annoyingly it must be said, several times, the track soon settles into a steady intermittent guitar groove, much akin to Primal Scream's "Rocks". Assisted by pounding drums and supportive bass, Rikki Lee's vocals are rough yet warm tinged with typical rock'n'roll attitude. Some of the lyrics leave a bit to be desired, and after a few listens everything seems to become a little too repetitive, meaning there's no long-lasting appeal here. There isn't anything that really reaches out and grabs you by the throat.
'The Skies' are in the same vein as good old rhythm and blues rock'n'roll, therefore fans of this particular genre should definitely have a listen and are sure to find something that they can engage with. Unfortunately, this writer cannot buy into the hype; a decent single, but nothing explosive.
