Ibiza Rocks- The Album

When I first picked up the Ibiza Rocks CD, released 3rd September, I was concerned for my delicate rock ears to see what a well known dance capital would do to my precious tunes. And I have to admit I was pretty impressed.

With the likes of Maps, The Klaxons and Hot Chip all coming through the ranks and introducing experimental electro funk to their tracks, the inclusion of dance anthem remixes works really well with the chosen tunes. The first CD has an awesome remix of the one and only Gossip tune everybody knows and a pretty cool version of the Reverend and the Makers hit. Bloc Party have had another battering with a Phones disco edit, but with only these exceptions- the first side of the CD is untouched. Impressive classics from up and coming bands such as The Holloways, The Pigeon Detectives and the Cribs all feature but have remained in their original state, questioning how much work was actually put into this compilation.

The second side is a completely different ball game. More unknown bands such as the Foals, Peter, Bjorn and John and Mercury prize nominee- the New Young Pony Club get to have their say, with the remix of The Foals "Hummer" in particular a really get up and go clubbing anthem. King of the chop and change Mark Ronson, receives spoonfuls of his own medicine, as Stop me is revamped- fortunately for the artist, not to the same quality. CD 2 can be questioned for lacking in substance but for me- this is what this CD should really represent.

Ibiza Rocks is a really good compilation CD- but is it grabbing at the wrong market? The lack of remixes on the well established tunes leads me to catergorise this CD alongside summer festival compilations, which I don't think is really the chosen market. The first side is very commercial in comparison and lacks that Ibiza touch. It's a good CD and one I would definitely put on prior to a night on the town. Yet- I could hear these tunes on the albums I already own.
