No not the Pop Idol failure

Malakai are an interesting find, a Bristol based duo that are as at home with spaghetti western moods as they are with samples and beats. Featuring Scott (music) and Gee (vocals) their list of influences will probably leave you completely confused as to what they will sound like and ultimately that works in their favour as they have provided their own licence to try any style or trick that they wish.

Opening track 'The Battle' is funky with a good deal of bite, the vocals bordering on threatening at times. The main riff could be lifted from Ennio Morricone but it works a treat when the drums kick in and already you're forced to sit up and take notice. 'Moonsurfing' is a touch more laid back but sounds fresh and uplifting. The actual tunes are perfectly simple but it's the vocals that make Malakai work, occasionally forceful, always purposeful and precise they hold the interest and give the band a good edge.

Closing track 'Words like Humble' is a slice of Jamaican dancehall reggae and when you discover that Segs of the Ruts is behind the controls it's no surprise that it's done very well. Within just a few short songs Malakai have taken us on a journey through numerous styles and moods and really wet the appetite for the album. Malakai are fresh in more ways than one.
