'She Called Up' seems to be an incredibly literal song judging by the picture of a phone on its cover and the arrangement of a phone printed onto the CD. Clearly Crowded House are not a band who require their fans to dig a little deeper, which is all very well as I need to do no digging at all to come to the conclusion that this song is incredibly poor.
No doubt this single will appeal to Crowded House's predominantly middle aged, MOR-loving fans but while you listen it's grating, and soon afterwards you'll have forgotten it completely. A cheesy effort that shows no willingness to move beyond their firmly established territory. The single also focuses heavily on remixes, suggesting maybe the band are running out of steam, something this exercise in blandness easily supports.
