Classical Symphony Melded To Hip Ho

When I read the title of The Black Ghosts' single, 'Some Way Through This', I assumed it was cock-rock that would make me feel sad because there are people on this earth that are stupid enough to enjoy it. From the first note of the single, however, I was actually a little intrigued. The Black Ghosts have merged the sound of a classical symphony with the fat bass and hook-y drum-lines of a hip-hop song. Add to that the fact that they sing (yes, SING) about choking a lover, and you have a mildly interesting piece of music.

The single takes itself a little too seriously, though, especially considering the blase quality of much of the lyrics: "if this house was on fire, would you tell me your desires?" BORING. However, they salvage themselves with the follow-up line: "if my hands were around your throat, would you tell me what I want to know?" NASTYBAD.

The vocals are powerful and the backing music is very professional. However, the song isn't fun; it takes itself far too seriously for a piece with a bass-line so traditional. If the song was about karate and love, rather than a mediocre post-breakup/bad relationship lament, then The Black Ghosts would be on to something.

The remixes by The Replicants, Plastician & Skream, and Waajeed betray the dance-rock/hip-hop element of The Ghosts' musicianship; however, the genre they're aiming for is still better represented by She Wants Revenge who manage to sing about how sexy domestic abuse is while hip-hop dance rocking out to disgustingly attractive beats (literally and figuratively).
