They sampled a what?!

At this time of year (Christmas, for those reading an archive), one gets an impression of musical context that is not found so much at any other time of year. Music for preparing for a night out to remember and music of power ballads to listen to in the car (strictly for the over 50s) are the main sellers, but, digging slightly deeper, it seems that we like to be told what music to listen to and when. Of course, if you are reading this then chances are that you are the more discerning of music buying appreciator, and you feel that you are capable of making your own choices. But the music fit for purpose issue does hold some water, and it is something that is always worth bearing in mind. Like with “Tiger, My Friend”.

“Tiger, My Friend” is undoubtedly a quality piece of work. The songs, although falling into the pretentious setup of sampling “randomness” (such as city streets and kittens mewing) to flesh out the sound, are melodic, memorable and interesting, and the overall feel of the record is one that has been considered, toned and polished before release. Given the flabby, over serious nature of others in the electronic/experimental camp, this is truly an achievement. There are several moods realised on the album that are always delivered with panache and promise. The delicate moments of “Velvet Pony” lead into the absolutely bonkers but brilliant “About Fun” in a majestic juxtaposing sweep. It's typical of the whole album.

But make no mistake, this is a niche genre and one that is not all that concerned with times, places and circumstances of the listener. Great although it is, where is one meant to listen to it? Engine and road noise would drown out the subtleness that gives the album its heart. Walking around a town or city would require too much concentration and distraction to really take the album in. Even when working at a computer, things might get missed. It is here, and only here, that the “Tiger, My Friend” suffers any kind of blow.

Having said all this, if you love your music then you will probably spend at least some of your week doing nothing but reclining in a chair and listening to a record. And, if this is you then you are in for a rare and rewarding treat. If however, you want something to distract you from inputting data or doing the ironing then, good though this is, there are more suitable things out there for you.
