It's cool to be Canadian

Over the course of the past couple of years a glut of amazing new bands has sprung from Canadian shores. The current crop of Canadian bands are producing some of the most glorious new music around, ranging from Holy Fuck’s teutonic, lo-fi electronic experimentation to the atmospheric and luscious soundscapes produced by The Besnard Lakes. It is, seemingly an amazingly fresh and vibrant time for Canadian music.

The latest in a seemingly constant chain of Canadian alt-rock bands, Montreal’s Land of Talk have enjoyed a “nuzzling acclaim” in their home country over the past couple of years. With their blend of fuzzy, scuzzy garage rock, propelled by the sort of sky scraping guitars favoured by the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain; it is easy to see why the group have been making waves on the ‘New Canada Scene’. ‘Young Bridge’ is an infectious, yet intense track which showcases both the band’s knack for producing “barbed and impassioned pop” and the achingly gorgeous vocals of Elizabeth Powell. It breezes along with a chiming, summery melodic charm which is instantly addictive. This is a deliciously angst-fuelled anthem, which suggests Land of Talk could be well worth keeping an eye on over the coming months.
