Your New Antique - Heir To Nothing

Your New Antique don’t send out the usual single A4 piece of paper of quotes to accompany their CD. We get a “press pack”. And it starts with “hello”. For whatever reason, this kind of endears them to me, and reinforces the image of a tiny indie 4-piece. Which is my first mistake. They may sound twee, but the first crashing intro of ‘Heir to Nothing’ put paid to the idea that their sound is anything other than out-and-out rock designed to appeal to rockers and indie kids alike. It’s somewhere in the middle of the two.

Unfortunately, this wonderful CD must have been a damaged in the post, as it isn’t entirely reliable in playing back. So if I miss the finer details, my apologies. Track 3, ‘Forgotten’, didn’t manage to play at all.

With suitably angsty lyrics and a catchy, grinding guitar riff, this will certainly appeal to rockers and indie kids from the UK too used to American rock imports. It’s certainly nice to hear a British band compete on an equal level with these all conquering groups such as Foo Fighters. Off the top of my head, I can think of a handful of bands from Britain that these guys would happily fit in with, such as My Vitiol. And yes, I believe these tunes are just as catchy. Maybe not world-conquering yet, as their biography hopefully suggests, but we’ll see…

The music combines the earnestness of indie with a decent beat, and even more incredibly, you can hear the beat. I was half expecting it to be drowned in overdrive, but the sound is unusually sharp and clean. Which is a very good thing. These guys obviously have a traditional attitude to the music they make, so I also got a long list of tour dates. Go and see them. Go now. Right now. Stop reading this and go. I just have a feeling that these songs would sound amazing live.

p.s. thank you for the nice little booklet.
