A touch of class for the mainstream radio market
‘S.O.S (Anything But Love)’, the new single from Apocalyptica, features guest vocals from the magnificent Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil. The track is taken from their current album ‘Worlds Collide’ which has been top ten in ten different countries across Europe and sold over three million copies to date.
‘S.O.S’ sees Apocalyptica go for the hard rock equivalent of the mainstream power ballad with great effect. This song does take a couple of listens to get under your skin, but the combination of gritty guitars and Scabbia’s vocals which are both soothing and powerful, means this should appeal to the traditional heavy rock fan as well as the more commercially minded.
We’re treated to the familiar “lighter in the air” song structure, soft intro, in this case there’s a slightly sinister edge, before the easy on the ear vocals build to the hard-hitting full band chorus, with the track ultimately building back down to the point from where it came.
On listening to the Apocalyptica album this stands out as ideal single material, all be it for the European market rather than the UK where sadly ‘S.O.S’ is likely to go largely unnoticed. A good sign of diversity from Apocalyptica, certainly nothing we haven’t heard before, but a very enjoyable track nonetheless.
‘S.O.S (Anything But Love) is released on March 10.
