The Clik Clik - Did you wrong
The press release accompanying this annoyingly contagious track (modestly described as “one of 2008’s greatest pop songs”) asks the question “You switched on to The Clik Clik yet?”. The answer is that I’m not really sure to be honest; as there is something strangely likeable about the track itself, a saccharine sweet slice of twee teen pop, which tells the age old tale of a rocky teen relationship. Juxtaposing a tune so upbeat, complete with the requisite annoying ‘wonky pop’ keyboards with downbeat lyrics (“I fucked up, I’ve never meant it so much”) is hardly a new trick, but it is one which works and is sure to find fervour with kids with a myspace fixation, an obsession with Skins and Haduoken.
Scratch beneath the surface though, and ask yourself is there any real emotional depth or charged intensity to music of this sort? In short, the answer has to be no. It might tick all the right boxes for the sugar rush fixated teenager, but in essence it is a bit like a jam doughnut without a filling. However, it is coated in enough sugar to divert attention away from its shortcomings and will undoubtedly inspire terrible freaky dancing at indie disco’s nationwide.
