SixToes - 'Four Leaved Clover'

Named in honour of the extra appendage sported by an unnamed band-member, SixToes are a London-based group that play moody acoustic folk. Their debut single features two songs from their currently untitled forthcoming album, which judging from ‘Four Leaved Clover’ and ‘Reggae Song’ should be one to keep an eye out for.

‘Four Leaved Clover’ trundles along with melancholic torpor, musings suggestive of life stuck in second gear gently accompanied by a simple acoustic guitar line and subdued strings. ‘Reggae Song’ is another proposition altogether, vocal duo David Greenep and Ben Rogers letting loose with harmonisations that grumble and rave in the muck a la Tom Waits before soaring in quivering falsetto, all to a jaunty little beat.

While ‘Four Leaved Clover’ became a bit wearing after several listens • the edited version that trims the atmospherics is better than the normal track • ‘Reggae Song’ exudes a ramshackle seductiveness, all grubby hair and stained trousers. Good stuff.
