Ain't half bad
One of those bands who have seemingly been around for years without ever breaking free of the constraints of the UK underground rock scene, Fony are still chugging along, kindly funded by daddy.
Whilst they've floundered and played support to the likes of Shadows Fall, they’ve had to contend with seeing their one-time classmates overtake and overshadow them. Funeral For A Friend, Lostprophets, Sikth and even Breed 77 have all surpassed Fony in terms or popularity, record sales and tours both in the UK and overseas. So although by now it sounds slightly dated, you can believe their youthful angst on 'Nefer' is truly heartfelt and genuine.
The guitars chug in all the right places, and singer Olly Gibbons croons with an inflection much like Brock Lindow of 36 Crazyfists. B-side track 'Fait Accompli' is an interesting proposition; it has an almost Eastern Incubus/A Perfect Circle vibe to it until it kicks in with full six-string force. Whilst the struggle is ongoing for the band, this track should surely win them a few more fans and bump them up the ladder another rung or two.
