Zeya, who was named after an escaped Siberian tiger, is a singer/songwriter from Wiltshire, and more specifically the close-knit and well-related town of Devizes. This may well go somewhere to explain her music, as whilst like the town it is nice, it’s also caught in the past, so whilst Cher once poised the question, “If I could turn back time.” Someone should’ve said, “Well, love, get your sailors and your stocking-outfit over to Devizes”, as this is a pre-internet, pre-SKY, and even pre-electricity community, and unfortunately the musical style is lost somewhere between 1989 and 1995.
Zeya has got a very good voice there is no denying this, and it can lend itself to middle-of-the-road Rock to Country, and there is a definite similarity to LeAnn Rimes, and this is evident in the main track here, ‘Dreams’ through the verse that is a simple Pop/Rock that builds into a chorus that wouldn’t look out of place on an M-People CD, that goes, “We all have dreams // We all have dreams // We all have dreams we can’t share.” There are subtle 90’s guitar riffs that either chug away or whine in an Eric Clapton kind of way.
The other two songs have less cheese in them and so come across slightly stronger. ‘Sticks’ is an acoustic number whereby we have dual singing that I would presume is both Zeya singing the higher and lower key in nice harmony, however for every praise that’s given for the singing, you have to take away marks for the overly simple lyrics. Last song, ‘Walls’ showcases her voice perfectly coming off like Leona Lewis and is another slow number over the top of a strumming acoustic guitar.
Zeya was recently voted Best Newcomer at last years Marlborough Festival, however judging by the lack of talent around Swindon and North Wiltshire, it’s probably not as impressive as it sounds! There is no denying her good strong voice however, and dare I say that she could find fame if she moved to London and changed her style, as under the guidance of a good strong manager she could have what it takes…
