Left Feeling Both Alive & Amplified

Ladies and Gentlemen please welcome The Mooney Suzuki, straight out of the Big Apple. Though why I am introducing them, I’m not quite sure, as they require no introduction. They’ve been praised by every big name magazine so far, from NME to Kerrang! and I must say I am going to jump on this bandwagon and join the Mooney Suzuki coup. And how can I begin to describe this first single off their new album of the same title? It is so infused with so many different sounds and influences I’m not quite sure where to begin.

For starters an enticing guitar scale intro builds into lead singer, Sammy James Junior’s voice, sounding very much like Anthony Kiedis in full swing. It has very much a funk background to it which is indeed found on many of the Chilli’s finer pieces of work. The verse is short but sweet and the chorus is better. A wonderful mixture of backing vocals, singing as if in a Bee Gees tune, enhances the quality of Sammy’s voice and gives the song almost a comical edge. It is indeed entertaining to listen to. Cue mid-song guitar solo and we have the makings of a perfect opening gambit with ‘Alive and Amplified.’

The Mooney Suzuki have supplied an up-front, in your face tune that you can’t dislike. You listen to it over and over and will probably still find a new part of the song to love. No matter how attached you are to the old ways of making music, this is new, improved and the real deal and you are powerless against it.
