Biography
The Academy Is... is an alternative/pop punk band from Chicago, Illinois, founded by William Beckett and Michael Carden in 2002. The band was originally named “The Academy” but added the “Is…” in 2004 to avoid legal trouble since there were already bands under that name.
Beckett and Carden were members of rival bands in the Chicago music scene. After Beckett’s band broke up, he wanted to find another person who shared his musical interest and passion. After Carden’s band broke up, the two guys found themselves talking and involved in deep conversations about music, and later becoming involved in a serious relationship. After the two came together, The Academy Is..., formed very quickly. They added Adrian LaTrace Jr. as second guitarist, Mike DelPrincipe on drums, and Adam Siska on bass. In 2004, they recorded their EP, The Academy. Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, head of Decaydance Records, his vanity label of Fueled By Ramen, enjoyed what he heard and convinced his label to fly out to see them. After being signed immediately, the band headed to Florida to record their debut album Almost Here. But after recording this, there were some changes in the line-up of the band. Tom Conrad replaced LaTrace as guitarist and back-up vocals, and Andy Mrotek replaced drummer DelPrincipe. After recording the album, they embarked on a tour, which included Fall Out Boy.
In February 2005, their debut album was released and they continued touring. The following year, while on the Warped Tour, they started writing songs for their sophomore album, finishing with it as they finished with the tour. They flew to Los Angeles to start recording. But in October 2006, The Academy Is... announced on their blog on their official website that they had parted ways with guitarist Tom Conrad. He was replaced with Michael Guy Chislett. The band finished recording their album December 23, and Santi was released April 3, 2007. The Academy Is... has gained a following to become one of the hottest bands around, and their success and fame continues to grow.
