Magical Music
Antony Hegarty is a master of the unusual; his flighty and touching albums impressed music industry professionals enough for him to win the Mercury Music Prize in 2005, since then he’s turned up all over the place and although we’ve come to expect the unexpected, this cover of Beyonce’s ‘Crazy In Love’ is still a pretty curious move. Luckily Antony has mastered the art of the cover, adding his quivering vocal flourishes to the soulful tune and giving it a fresh feel with shimmering strings and surges of anguished vocals. Antony’s soft, precious whimpers of, “Got me hoping you’ll save me right now” are truly heartrending and make Beyonce’s original sound overdone and far too blatant. A real master of emotions revels in subtlety.
‘Aeon’ is a delightful rich and soulful number with plenty of vocal colour and a slightly folk feel to the complex harmonies that pirouette and perform over the top of a gentle ebbing and flowing backing. It’s a really calming charm on the ears and perfect to soothe away your worries.
