Perfectly Glissful
Gliss combine the glorious fuzzrock afterglow of bands like the Jesus and Mary Chain and Velvet Underground with a bruising rhythm and chilled vocal harmonies. It’s the kind of music that you can imagine 70s lovelies swinging their long locks too in the days when musical instruments were producing new sounds on a weekly basis. There’s no harm in revisiting the past; although the sun-soaked synth sounds are no longer a new phenomenon, Gliss’s take on glowing psychedelic insouciance is a very attractive one.
The vocals are husky and seductive with an emotional tinge to them, teetering perfectly above the writhing mass of fuzz and tight percussion beat. Guitars ache and snarl, while the vocals soothe the aggressive edge away. ‘Morning Light’ is a perfectly penned and performed, example of why bands like Sonic Youth are still popular.
