An impressive collection of catchy songs with such raw power that they will rock your socks off.

Edinburgh-based melodic metal band Serpico are vocalist Mikey, guitarist and backing vocalist Oli, guitarist Steve, bassist Iain and drummer Jonny. The band’s new album ‘Neon Wasteland’ is an impressive collection of catchy songs with such raw power that they will rock your socks off.

Every track on the album is impressive; there’s nothing here to dislike. However, for me, the best tracks are kick-ass single ‘We Own The Night’, which I can see being a hit in clubs up and down the country, and ‘Godforsaken’, with its perfectly matched harmonies. Special mention should also be made of two of the calmer tracks on the album, the serene acoustic bridge track ‘Prelude’, which strips the band right down and shows off their musical ability without any of the bravado, and ‘Glasseye’, as Mikey’s vocals sound particularly tasty here! Both tracks are beautiful and fit in very well with the harder, more rockin’ songs on the album.

My only criticism of Serpico is that they have the same commercial sound as most of the current rock giants: if you’re a fan of Lostprophets you will love this band as the similarities will not go unnoticed. The lack of individuality is disappointing, however, it does appear to be bands with this particular sound that are doing the best in the world of rock right now so if it’s not broken, why fix it?

Talented vocalist Mikey’s gritty vocals sound awesome on this album, there’s no mind-blowing screaming here which is a very welcome change. There are some great, meaty guitar riffs throughout the album with every song having its own individual vibe - you can listen to the album over and over and not get bored.

Overall, ‘Neon Wasteland’ is a good album; I will definitely be looking out for future material by Serpico in the hope that, as they grow and mature they will take a slightly different direction to the masses. This album will appeal primarily to metal, punk and hard rock fans but there’s no reason why Serpico can’t break through to mainstream music channels in the future. If Lostprophets, Linkin Park and Nickelback can do it, why not Serpico?

Serpico are taking the world of rock by storm. Having already toured with Stone Gods, Aiden, Elliot Minor, Kill Hannah and currently Fightstar, the future’s looking bright! The band have attended the Kerrang! Awards for the last 2 years without any nominations, let’s hope they get the recognition they deserve in 2010!
