Baxter - End Of The World

South London quintet Baxter provides us with a four track EP called ‘End Of The World’, influenced by the diverse musical backgrounds that each of the band members have, while reflecting on their life experiences both individually and as Baxter.

The first track ‘End of the World’ tells of the dark side of relationships, but emitted with a positive spin. Musically the song is very strong, generating a sturdy melody as guitars stride with power. Next on the agenda is the bands first single ‘Standing on the Edge of the Tide’. They get a little Razorlight like with this one, upbeat and propelled by a good set of vocals and some enjoyable, easy to sing-a-long to lyrics. Things take a slower, more composed nature with ‘Something’s got to give’. There isn’t much room for the song to sparkle and shine, but it does however demonstrate Baxter can create a decent slower tune rather than sticking to upbeat poppy numbers. The concluding song ‘Avenue’, apparently about being a manufactured pop star is a personal tune or vocalist Jamie Tinkler (Pop Idol?) and you can at times feel the emotive value in his voice.

‘End Of The World’ includes four tracks that will not be regarded as some of the most remarkable and memorable tunes at the minute. However this is the bands debut EP and there is a lot of potential with each endearing song. This is a debut worth taking note of for future reference.
