Too hot to handle, and too cold to hold…
Presumably, and rather cunningly named after the number of legs that the band have, Eight Legs, are a mix of a more melodic Indie, mixed with some simple 1960’s idealism and with added harmonies to sweeten it all up. ‘I Understand’ has the chilled blanket of keyboards, and the non-committal vocals are slightly lazy, but in a good way. It’s a mid-tempo, with a laid back style of The Stone Roses mixed with some Americana. “Give it a try // stick a pen in my eye!” go the lyrics at one point…
‘Stay Cool’ reminds me very much of The Kinks, specifically in the guitar riff, and the vocal melody, and that’s always a bonus in my book. This gives the song a catchy hook with a raw rock feel and just nudges it ahead of the lead single. If the band were American then they would have a college rock feel to them.
Eight Legs appear to be one of those bands that sit in between genres, however whereas sometimes other bands find this advantageous by creating something new, I fear that whilst the band are not bad, they may fail to interest enough people. There is a little too much balls for Indie fans, but not enough heavy riffs for rock fans. Time will ultimately tell, but I think they may end up falling one side or the other in order to gain any real success.
