Classic Rock EES Style.

After the heady, hard-hitting, gritty but fun rock of their previous releases, “Sugoi Indeed” feels much tamer and somehow quite formal in tone at times. It does still sound like EES though and is by no means a damp squib. Beginning in classic EES style with ‘Metal Man’, fast drums and heavy riffs lead us into the record. ‘Out of Control’ follows; this track has a slower pace and sets the tone for much of the rest of the album. ‘Sugoi Indeed’ is one of the highlights; a bouncier beat and a pop sensibility make it danceable and addictive. ‘No Shit Sherlock’ is one of the most catchy, with a great sing along chorus and arguably the best track is 'M.T.B.' it’s amusing, memorable and punchy, a classic EES track, just brilliant.

This is a very solid record with sturdy riffs and drums and reliable vocals, but it feels a bit too comfortable, like the band aren’t being taxed and their playful edge seems a bit subdued. For the first time on one of their records you don’t feel the energy and intensity that usually oozes from every note and is one of the best things about their live shows; all the tracks here are great, well-played (as you would expect) and fun, of course, but the atmosphere is slightly muted.

EES are a talented bunch with a real DIY ethic and always consummate professionals making even the most complex riffs look and sound easy, if you’re not familiar with them, this album is as good a place to start as any; real foot stomping rock tunes you can get your teeth into. For fans, it’s not their most immediate album but it does grow on you pretty quickly.
