Jet - Shaka Rock

Having been in the studio for about a year, Australian rockers JET are now ready to release their third album to the world, titled ‘Shaka Rock’.

To be perfectly honest, although this is a fairly upbeat natured album there is nothing that jumps out at you or stays memorable after its eleven tracks have finished. There are some sleek melodies and vocals to match, but there are no catchy choruses you can grasp onto and remember and no one-liners that you can sing along to besides ‘Beat on Repeat’, which is performed in such a way that it doesn’t receive such an active response. There are a few moments of interest, such as the piano elements that make their presence on ‘Walk’ and ‘Seventeen’, which marks a new direction for JET with guitarist Cameron Muncey believing this is a step forward song writing-wise, but other than that the songs pass without much of an impact.

The most appealing song by a long shot is the album closer ‘She Holds A Grudge’. It is such a shame that you have to sit though eleven moderately enjoyable tracks to then hear a slow moving yet very emotive tune. This one starts gently before building with sound and rounding up with emotional vocals, tender and honest music and a guitar solo that actually has an effect on the song. You can actually lose yourself within the four or so minutes this one plays.

Sitting somewhere between ballads and rock tunes, ‘Shaka Rock’ is quite disappointing and quickly forgotten quickly since there is nothing that stands out a great deal.
