The Junk - Novus Ordo Seclorum

The Junk is a seven-piece Brighton based band that mixes elements of heavy punk rock with ska supplements to form their own unique style of skacore music.

The bands debut record, ‘Novus Ordo Seclorum’ demonstrates the persistently upbeat sound of The Junk though three songs. Each of the songs holds the skacore element incredibly close but the way in which the songs are fashioned just doesn’t seem to fully bond with each other. There are some strong crashing drums and heavy guitar rhythms with the added brass segments. Individually each section is well formed, but when together, the brass segments are more distinctive and this is slightly overpowering.

The punk vocals are very loud and in your face on these songs, being shouted above the music. The harmonies begin to make their presence known on the opener ‘Scream Your Dreams’. They get a little stronger on ‘Monkey See Monkey Do’ and as ‘Far From Here’ closes the record, the harmonies make the verses as well as choruses more enjoyable and united.

The style of ‘Novus Ordo Seclorum’ is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but you may learn to love the dedication and creativity of The Junk.
