Accomplished Debut

London five piece, Trail, release their debut album ‘To The Rest Of The World’, which in itself is something of a heart warming story. The band through plenty of hard work managed to raise £20,000 to help record the album and managed to attract legendary producer Matt Wallace to work with them. Now this is all very nice and touching but the important part is what the end result was.

Well, quickly skipping ‘Prism’, a weak opener, even if it was the first single to be released. ‘Flare’, the second track, sees the band come into their own with a very professional, polished, piece of melodic rock. A theme that then continues in large parts for the remaining tunes. Third track, ‘Forever Young’, shows they are happy to change pattern and styles and brings vocalist, Charile Afif, into the fore and he does not disappoint with his range of vocals, perfect pitch for the right moment. ‘Back Home’ starts a bit too gentle and worrisome but when the guitars kick in it soon becomes a bit Freebirdish, which can only be considered a good thing. ‘Worry Free’ sees the traditional mid album ballad, just wish bands did not feel like they are obliged to put these songs on albums, quite happy rocking thanks.

‘City’ is another of the more commercial tunes, which is going to be released as a single, shame as it is nowhere near one of their better tracks. Which ‘Fumes’ clearly is, it is a racy little number which shows off the bands vocal talents, rocking guitars and pounding drums all the way through. The final two tracks see the longer, emotional, ‘All Down’ and not just one but two predictable slow numbers, ‘I Want To Know’ and the title track, wrap up forty minutes of intriguing music.

There will no doubt be similarities drawn up with bands like Biffy Clyro but as a debut, this is a very good effort, mature and very accomplished. Although there maybe one or two weaker tracks, there are quite a few established acts that would be proud to call ‘To The Rest Of The World’ one of their own.
