Sharp Practise - Sound Of Rock
‘Sound Of Rock’ is the latest offering from Manchester’s own Classic Rock, Power Pop, Rock Pop band Sharp Practise. As you can see, it is difficult to nail this band down to one particular genre.
Formed in 1999, the band has released acclaimed albums of catchy tunes and this single follows the successful blueprint of their previous work.
The title track begins with some nice acoustic guitar work before the distinctive voice of Nigel Clothier comes in. A catchy, rhyming lyric meanders above the tight backing and the chorus is addictive. I think the song would benefit from a nice guitar break, just to break it up a bit. The band is obviously made up of accomplished musicians and the vocals (and backing vocals) all work. Saying that, I do feel the track lacks some bite. It all seems a little bit too laboured.
The second song on the cd, ‘Girls Don’t Look’ is a another power pop ballad which seems to have no underlying structure and being so disjointed I found it difficult listening. The sound quality wasn’t up to much either.
Fans of Sharp Practise will like this and I’m sure that it will get some radio air play, though sadly I found it wanting and un-dynamic.
