Debut wth a difference

Cha-Cha formed in 2009 and since then been busy writing, recording and performing. ‘Phonographic Love’ was the debut single from London based trio and gained a large amount of attention. With the bands debut album ‘We Are…’ released soon, it is about time to sit up and take note of Cha-Cha.

With this release, the trio prove themselves as talented songwriters as well as magnificent musicians. They are capable of taking inspiration from a wide range of sources and then building music around the lyrics. With these ten tracks they have focused on themes such as a girl obsessed with a pop star (‘Phonographic Love’), the social segregation in Fraternity houses (‘The Fellowship’), a senile associate believing she was born in a different decade (‘Seventies Casualty’) and a failing car salesman with a shopaholic wife (‘Second Chances’).

Once the theme of the song was established the music was created. Each of the tracks initially started as acoustic numbers, which formed the basis of the song, then instruments were introduced; the style of which was dependant on the lyrics and theme. Some still retain this acoustic feel like ‘Bring You Down’ while others avert from it completely. There are a variety of synths and noises used within tunes such as ‘Cherokee’, ‘Seventies Casualty’ and ‘Flashlight’. Lead vocalist Blain McGuigan makes the songs that much more indulgent to listen to.

The one thing that each of the songs has in common is its intention to get a reaction from a listener, the bop of your head, the stamp of your feet and the clapping of hands. ‘We Are..’ is an album which the band describe as “a cross between dirty pop hymns and offbeat disco rock”, which is actually very accurate and is released via Pop Noodle Records on May 10th.
