The Compass.
“The Compass” is the latest single from London-based four piece Projekt. If this song was released ten years ago, people might have scoffed at it, due to its similarities to Britpop bands such as Oasis and the Verve, but also some sounds and samples used which are reminiscent of dance music, two genres which rarely work together. But nowadays people are a lot more open to the clashing sounds of such musical genres, with Kasabian being a prime example. “The Compass” manages to bring these two styles of music together seamlessly. The use of reverse delay on both the guitars and vocals make a unique sound and the jumpy drums and hopping bass line make the song instantly likeable and very interesting to listen to. The chorus is massive and one that everyone who hears it will remember. The two b sides are exceptionally good, but not as catchy as the single. The acoustic number, Heroes and Villains is very Ian Brown-esque and cheerful. The unmastered recording of Desert Storm shows the raw sounds a listener would expect to hear at a live show, which gives great hope for the live performances of the band. Britpop is still here, and by the looks of things, here to stay.
