Echo Lake
Echo Lake is not a band with a conventional or traditional layout. There is no lead singer, there is no lead guitarist, there is no drummer and there is no bassist. Every member of the band is a multi-instrumentalist, and this is brilliant, because there are only three of them. That’s right, three men can make this much noise, as previously proven by Biffy Clyro, or Reuben, but that doesn’t mean that these three men making this noise aren’t significant.
Opening track “Sink” has a guitar hook so catchy that it will easily have every dance floor in the country bouncing. The swift time signature changes which are ever so flawlessly done make this song a winner from start to end, and in every sense of the word. It is easy to see why this was the title track of the EP, as it is easily single material, and more than deserves to have TV and radio play.
“Untied” is next up on the track listing, and it has every bit as much charm as the opener. The introduction builds you up for another massive guitar hook, but it doesn’t come when you expect it to, and you will be left on the edge of your seat until that first chorus hits you like a brick wall. The chorus is the kind of sing-along factor that every songwriter aims for when they attempt to pen a hit.
The next song is named “Spark” and is another absolute gem from start to finish. This song showcases the talent of the lyricist of the band, whoever that happens to be. The guitars throughout the verses keep this song in your face, but upbeat throughout the few minutes it lasts. The chorus is another sing-along, as is everything this band seems to write.
The last song on the EP is a stripped down acoustic track named “Eyelids.” In this song the singer has opened himself up, without the backing of a full band the focus is entirely on what is being said, but that doesn’t matter. The emotional lyrics are present throughout the EP, so it makes no difference that they are the main focus here as they are still excellent. It is a perfect closer for this EP and will keep you wanting more.
Echo Lake are one of the most exciting British bands you will hear for a while, and it’s only a matter of time before you do hear them if this EP is anything to go by.
