Bjork
"Instruments are so over" Björk tells us. It's true, after listening to 'Triumph of a Heart', it's evident that after these thousands of years developing musical instruments and pushing their technology to new extremes, all we ever really needed was the endless power of the human voice.
Incorporating a human trombone in the form of Gregory Purnhagen and beat-boxing from Dokaka and the ubiquitous Rahzel, this stunning song delivers a fresh experience that can be assigned as much merit as any song utilising 'real' instruments. Björk's unmistakably beautiful voice brings the fun verse into the truly awe-inspiring chorus, another superbly sculpted catchy hook that harks back to classics such as 'Big Time Sensuality'.
The B-side, Ben Frost's School of Emotional Engineering mix of 'Desired Constellation', the original of which can be found along side the single on last year's 'Medulla', is a cool transformation, achieved with the backing of The Icelandic Choir, although a tad slow-moving at times.
But this new single from the reliable tour de force that is Björk is an indisputable triumph in itself, a really damn good song, though the radio edit, which is the only version on the single, doesn't demonstrate its full prowess. The Spike Jonze video clip that accompanies this release is well-worth looking out for to, it's sensationally funny. Björk's back big time.
