Colour of Sound - When
'Colour of Sound'; an impossibly ironic band name and a band that consists of four individually talented musicians, each with their own solo projects, making 'Colour of Sound' more of a collective than a band, yet in some sense this makes their latest album "When" even more impressive.
"When" is the latest album from the four piece and this ten track offering is certainly unique; not only for the fact that all tracks are written and sung by different members of the band, it really is a shared and equal effort from the guys. The majority of vocals are sung by lead singer Rod da Rosa and are very mellow and soft and without a doubt easy listening. In fact the whole album tends to just flow through with tunes that are certainly very easy to listen to as lyrics tell various stories along the way.
Opening track, 'Take This Ride' is a haunting ballad with each band member taking to the vocals as they are harmonised and blended together; it is evident that they certainly gel as a band. The soothing sounds of track 'Here it Comes Again' shows as well just how well the band gel together and as the listener you feel as if they are made to play together, been doing it for years. There has been a lot of love and effort put into this album and that is evident from first listen. Their press release calls them 'organic', a word I would generally associate with farming not indie bands, yet for Colour of Sound, somehow this is a very fitting description; they have managed to create and album which is both musically talented and oozes originality, something very rare on today's music scene.
If you are in the Arcade Fire generation, a fan of Interpol or always enjoyed the mellow vocals of Starsailor, then Colour of Sound are probably a band you will enjoy. Not only are they musically talented but their songs are just so easy to listen to and rather enjoyable; so put your feet up, take a break and lay back listening to "When", you definitely need it!
