Just What the Doctor Ordered

Do not be fooled by the parental guidance name, GU Medicine should be listened to by everyone! Hailing from Barnsley and being only one year young, GU Medicine have the sounds to take them places. Signed to Undegroove, which hosts such new and in your face bands as Johnny Truant and Drive Like You Stole It, these boys have definitely found their platform to blast off, and this debut album really lights the fuse. Is Mary Ann Hobbs right? Are they better than sex?

Kicking it off we have ‘The Right Time’ which starts with charismatic guitar stabs and lead singer Lee Storrar’s gritty, dirty voice dominating the song. The chorus is written brilliantly with enticing guitar riffing and drum bashing culminating in a memorable three and a half minutes of mayhem. ‘On The Edge’ opens with the same brand of individual guitars with very definite and legendary playing to be heard weaved in an out of the entire song. The lyrics ‘I’m on the edge with no control’ sum up the whole feel of the album as simply as can be done. As for ‘Power Take Off’…the name just says it all. From start to finish this song is 100% rock and roll, not to forget the drugs and sex as well (how do you think the name came about?!).

‘Cut Me Some Slack’ is fast and furious; Vin Diesel has nothing on this track. Continuous hard hitting noise and a supreme guitar solo knocks you to the floor and then kicks you while you’re down. A definite highlight! For ‘Reward’ the vocals become more crisp, which works brilliantly as GU Medicine present a more honest rock track. This song definitely shows off the talent of the guitars with a quick burst of an immense solo. It’s shorter than the other tracks so far but takes nothing away from the unadulterated energy behind the music.

“I wanna drink until my kidneys are sore.” This can only be ‘The Occasional Drink’ and it means what it says. One of the most important aspects of rock has been honoured, and in style. ‘Red in yhe Obvious’ is genius – coming out with pure, untainted yet dirty rock matching Storrar’s vocals in a way that creates a classic, heavy, flair infused track which has been made the way rock should be. It has sex appeal and stamina and is just what GU Medicine needs to prove they are worth your time. We embark on ‘Gimmie the Girl’ with yet more strong guitars and a mixture of vocals and coarse screams. The power put into every track is more apparent here and you can feel the passion as the chorus reverberates ‘she’s driving me wild!’

To play us out we firstly have ‘Do or Die’ a pulsating anthem which signifies the heavier side of the band. Its no longer fun and games as you are left realising that these boys are capable of making any kind of music they want and they make it sound good! Lastly is ‘Find an Ending’ on which the boys get angry; the music becomes raucous and we have more aggression vocals and pounding guitars and drums. More vivacious than the rest of the album this song is full on, far out and you should get stuck in!
