Epic Whiskey Rock
We hear so much about this Bristol based rock band that you could easily assume they are signed to a major label, but Turbowolf is one of those bands where you are surprised that they are still unsigned. They have even been included in Classic Rock and Metal Hammer albums.
The "Big Cut EP" absolutely blasted me away. Turbowolf is not simply UK's answer to AC/DC and Airbourne with their riff laden, whiskey fuelled, pub brawl style rock. They offer a lot more with some experimental sounds and influences combined with their rock sound resulting in an unique sound.
'Ancient Snake' kicks off with no fuss rock 'n roll reminding me a bit of The Datsuns and (vocally) a bit of The Cult. With a rapid blast through the two and a half minute song leaves you wanting more. 'The Big Cut' is a bit heavier and offers more epic rock similar to what Wolfmother delivers; whilst 'Things Could be Good Again' has a bit more punk influenced whiskey rock; adding some psychedelic / prog for good measure. It is the longest song on the EP, and stands out from the other two minute songs. The final track, 'TW2', is an instrumental and a result of pushing the amplifier outputs to the maximum, resulting into more experimental outro; similar to what you would expect from Tool or NIN.
Turbowolf have certainly been making enough noise both sides of the Atlantic with shows including SXSW, Download and Sonisphere. Having just successfully completed a European tour opening for Korn they are currently on a nationwide tour with Dinosaur Pile-Up. I think they are earmarked to become a big rock name in the near future.
The "Big Cut EP" is out now and available via AWAL. Turbowolf plan to release their debut album in spring 2011.
