Hot stuff from Days In December!

When faced with a CD by a band you paid £4 to see last year along with the usual local bands, you’re obviously going to be a little dubious, especially if the highlight of the evening was going home. Maybe I should have paid attention to those Emo kids who were screaming like rabid cats at Days In December - they could see that this is a startlingly mature band who are filled to the brim with talent. It would also have meant that that the new EP ‘Countless Hours Making Waves’ would not have come as such a shock. Where I was expecting dull, I in fact received a dynamic introduction to the talent found in these rare individuals.

Having been taken under the wing of Funeral For A Friend, they’re basking in the glory of media attention and clearly loving it. Their music, demonstrated by lead in track ‘Bright Lights’ is a pleasant mixture of grating guitars, silken vocals and grainy growls meaning it’s easy to listen to, yet intelligent enough to be able to withstand several touches of the repeat button. Second track, ‘One Year Late’ starts off with a calm river of guitars before vocals kick in with a slightly crazed edge. It would be foolish to deny that you can hear Funeral For A Friend lurking underneath their razor sharp guitars. It would seem that it was not enough for Ryan Richards to deliver the first punch to the crumbling Emo genre with FFAF and so he takes up vocal duties with Days In December on their final track ‘Last Chance Before The Storm’ to deliver a follow up attack. The result is a touching song that rocks enough to prevent it from becoming tedious.
