The Sounds
If truth be known, I'm not entirely all that sure about this one. In parts, 'Something to Die For', shows real promise, with a style which reminds me of acts like Shiny Toy Guns et al. But be warned, although this song starts with great promise, it kind of falls short around the chorus. I mean, there's plenty of melody to be found, but it goes off more in a pop direction, rather than the New Wave tag associated with The Sounds would suggest. Digging a little deeper, I can imagine this working well in a stadium environment which would probably offer a reason that this fairly unknown Swedish collective can boast support slots with the likes of No Doubt, Foo Fighters, Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco. On top of this, 1000+ shows in over 25 different countries makes for a strong argument that there certainly is a place for The Sounds on a lot of play-lists, but for yours truly, until I hear a little more, I'll happily remain one of the non-converted. This will be the first single off their new album of the same name, which is due out on 2nd May, through Side One Dummy Records. To summarise, we have a sprightly little track here, but I think the band would do themselves no harm at all if they left the operatic Synth effects alone so they could pour a little more soul onto their wax.
