Jim Kroft – Memoirs From the Afterlife

After releasing his critically acclaimed album 'Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea', Jim Kroft has followed up with the single 'Memoirs From The Afterlife'.
Seemingly inspired by 1960s pop, the song is quite a jaunty affair with big, dramatic string moments and mixture in tempo and moods. The vocals effects add to the interest and the lyrics seem to go on forever. This big production has sweeping sounds and the underlying melodies are very infectious. The overall celebratory feel of the music belies the underlying dark lyrical content. Overall, the song is well written, very well arranged and very well produced. Even though this, in the main, is a throw back to much earlier times, I think it is commercial enough to do very well.

There is also the Eppy Remix of the song on the CD. Here, the song is stripped right down to the vocals and a handclapping backing; which is really quite clever. The other track on the CD, 'Cracked Polaroids', features lounge bar piano, French sounding accordion and acoustic guitar. Almost burlesque, I did find it's inclusion on the CD a little unnecessary and distracting.
