Deadwax – Deadwax EP
London four piece Deadwax has apparently impressed no other than Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page who saw them play The 100 Club, saying '..a band truly worthy of such a prestigious stage; they were fantastic..' That's praise indeed and a huge billing to live up to. Whether bands can keep up the excitement and raw feel of a live show and commit that to a studio recording is difficult. More often, the atmosphere of the venue, the crowd response and the 'live' sound enhances the senses and makes the gig sound better than it actually is; though I'm not saying that was the case with Mr Page.
The EP, unsurprisingly entitled "Deadwax EP" contains four tracks. The opener, 'Indigo' begins well enough and has a raw, yet structured sound. Heavy in parts, it develops into a typical vintage rock song. With the ground rules set, I eagerly awaited the next track. 'Shoot You Down' was a disappointment. The formula was old and well used and the track didn't sound new in any way; it could have been any one of a hundred or so bands. The disappointment continued with 'The Rider' and 'Throne', pretty much the same formula and all quite uninspiring.
This band have undoubted abilities and should try and look for a sound of their own instead of just churning out songs that just fade into the oblivion of so many others that have gone before.
