Evanescence - Evanescence
Goth rockers Evanescene are back with their third and self-titled album, which they're hoping will catapult to the same level of success as their debut album.
Amy Lee undoubtedly has one of the most recognisable voices in the music industry; she is still pitch perfect, her vocals as impressive as they were on their debut album back in 2003. However, the rest of the band has a lot of catching up to do.
While Lee shows diversity in her vocals, the band, who show great musicianship, never really alter their sound, which has led to 'Evanescence' being full of some beautiful highs, and some mundane lows.
Opening track 'What You Want' is probably the most upbeat track in the bands' short back catalogue, from just one listen it is clear why it was chosen as the lead single. The chorus gets stuck in your head, and even has a dance-friendly beat.
Throughout "Evanescene" you can see parallels to their debut album "Fallen", I'm left wishing they had done something a bit more unpredictable. The whole album is incredibly easy on the ear, but it's definitely lacking some originality.
My favourite track on the album is 'Made Of Stone', musically and vocally it's strong, a huge track with a massive chorus - what Evanescene should be. 'Never Go Back' is also worth a mention, this is another big track, which shows of the band's musical talent. It's perfectly arranged, vocals and music are perfectly balanced.
I have to admit, I am a little disappointed with 'Evanescene', potential shines through on every single track, but rarely do the band fulfil that potential. It's almost as if they are in the middle of an identity crisis, every song is clearly an Evanescene song but something is missing, and it doesn't seem like that band knows what that missing ingredient is.
