Anja McCloskey - 'A Kiss'
"It's so lovely when you discover something genuinely beautiful" is what Q Music had to say in praise of McCloskey's latest release and it's hard to disagree with the fact that it's genuine, however 'beautiful' would be better replaced by the word unique, as her fairytale vocals are given a backdrop of theatrical percussion that perfectly balances the refreshingly childlike joyfulness. When it's all pulled together effortlessly by a gypsy-like accordion backing, the whole track builds steadily, with the sum of its' parts giving the feeling of a fairytale, somehow quiet and simple to start, yet growing to a complex cacophony that belies the arrangement's ingenious intricacy.
Having achieved such critical acclaim for her previous release last year 'And Her Head', this trademark mix of accordion, along with violin, double bass and guitar will no doubt leave her fans satisfied with her latest offering.
"A Kiss is about someone who is only concerned with their own feelings and actions, and not the effect they are having on others" says Anja. "So I guess the song is even a little angry... but in a melodic way".
No better way to sum up a powerful piece of art
