Violet - The Brightside CDEP
Shortly before touring the UK and playing at the ever-growing Hit The Deck festival in April, Violet released their debut EP, The Brightside.
It is clear to see why Violet were placed amongst acts such as Kids in Glass Houses, Deaf Havana and Lower Than Atlantis whilst playing on the main stage at Hit The Deck festival this year - with their music taking an obvious influence from modern day bands such as these, and also taking a heavy influence from the bands of the 'emo' and hardcore genres which took storm throughout the noughties.
I particularly felt that this EP has the likability factor due to the reminders of the bands I listened to throughout my teens, such as Saosin, Funeral for a Friend and UnderOATH. It's quite refreshing to see a band almost go back in time with their sound, rather than conforming to the ever so popular pop-punk genre of today. However, it's from this that I wonder whether this band will make it to the same level of popularity with the public.
The melodic guitars, particularly so in Perspectives, demonstrate the more classic sound to this genre of rock music, and when collided with epic vocals, which share a great similarity to the soaring vocals of Cove Reber of Saosin, this song truly demonstrates the bands talent. But You Have Heard Of Me demonstrates the bands ability to write and perform songs of varying sounds , throwing some heavy guitars riffs and angry vocals, whilst Seven For A Secret' again takes this band to a whole new level of epic music making, creating a song so dramatic it could be used in a rock opera.
I wouldn't say that Violet are for everyone as their sound really is quite unique, however in the recent popularity of non-mainstream bands such as Deaf Havana, I do believe that there's a space for Violet to become well-known and well-liked to a wide audience, particularly so when they release a full-length debut.
Violet are now touring the UK with Attention Thieves and Stars Of The Search Party, and their EP The Brightside is now available.
