Instantly addictive
You need two things to succeed as a two piece: talent (obviously) and charisma in bucketloads, and this Australian duo, like all great duos, have both of these qualities and they also make a huge amount of noise with just guitar, drums and vocals in the bargain. We caught them last October at Swn festival in Cardiff and they make just as much of an impact on this debut full length as they did live.
The album gets off to a feisty start (after a short intro) with the fast paced and scuzzy Teenage Kickstarts it's a short but effective kick which gets you totally pumped for the rest of the record - the distorted guitar sound induces goose bumps and the energy is infectious, it's a brilliant start. And you want to love the album from the first moments. Cops Capacity is another killer track - a dark and moody start brings to mind QOTSA briefly before it breaks into one of the Deathrays fuzz laden but danceable breakdowns with sultry vocals. One of the best tracks on the album is recent single No Sleep catchy, noisy and hooky, it's seriously addictive.
Their aggressive and distorted noise coupled with some danceable electro flashes makes DZ Deathrays, not the most original band around, but certainly one of the most instantly addictive and this album is huge fun to dance to. They seem to have an uncanny knack for penning a great melody and seemingly limitless energy so they easily impress and keep you returning for more. It's hard to imagine that this band are going to stay in the shadows of anyone for long, so get in there and discover them now while you still have the opportunity to see them in intimate venues, plus this is sure to be one of your albums of the year.
