My Favourite Runner Up - Thoughts, Feelings, Actions
After listening to band after band after band attempting to make a name for themselves in the music industry, there is usually very few instances where a band is actually able to make you sit up and think "there is something special in this". My Favourite Runner Up is one of these bands.
Coming together with an fondness for bands such as Jimmy Eat World, Lostprophets and New Found Glory, it was 2006 that saw punk rock foursome My Favourite Runner Up combine their love and passion to create their own blend of melodic tunes. The new EP, Thoughts, Feelings, Actions, is a five track collection of tunes, kicking straight in with the upbeat Let It Ride. From the opening seconds this one slams in with pulsating guitars, rumbles off some soaring rhythms and catchy lyrics for the chorus. The guitar solos show off some real talented playing. As Our Time Now starts up, the riffs turn things a little darker, giving more of a punch in its wake and creating a heavier tune. Where the opening track was quite poppy, this one is much tighter in its rhythms and melodies.
The conveyer belt of tracks from the Welsh four piece continues with Start Living Today; its backing harmonies making a much more athematic presence and a chorus that draws you in. Drawing Board continues on a similar path with its bouncy melodies and sing a long harmonies. Separate Myself From Me is the albums closing tune and goes out with a full blown explosion of sound. The vocals throughout this release are one of its finest features to draw you in makes you want to sing along; these are most notable during the catchy choruses.
These punk rock tunes are going to make listeners want to head out and check these guys performing live. My Favourite Runner Up is ready to break through in 2012 so keep an eye out.
