Ben Folds Five are back with their first album in thirteen years; which is the fourth studio album for the band called The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind
The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind was funded through a PledgeMusic campaign and a portion of the funds generated by album sales and other items ordered by fans through PledgeMusic, will be used to support Music Education and Music Therapy, a charity personally chosen by Ben Folds Five.
Many fans will have heard the lead single Do It Anyway as an unmastered copy has been floating around the airwaves. That song is very typical of the rest of the album, and features a stunning and driving instrumental.
The songs found on The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind are exactly what you would expect from the numerically incorrect Ben Folds Five. Yet again, the trio have created a brilliantly melodic and upbeat album that is impossible not to sing along with.
Title track The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind is a large and wondrous track, the piano work is stunning, simple and elegant and it's beautifully complimented by Ben's pitch perfect vocals and building percussion. Draw A Crowd is a big sing along track and it is impossible to sit still while listening to it.
Closing track Thank You For Breaking My Heart is a real tear jerker and if it's performed in a live setting there will not be a dry eye in the house. It's a soft and gentle song with a couple of big moments, that is completed by delicate piano work.
The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind is the perfect reunion album; it is wonderfully written, recorded and produced. If Ben Folds Five sound half as good as this when they tour in December fans will be in for a real treat.
