Folks Release their Debut Album
It's not often a band can say they've toured with Miles Kane, or are about to tour with Band of Skulls, or that not only do they share their roots, but have also shared a stage with one of the godfathers of modern music; Noel Gallagher, all before they've even released their debut album.
The band took a break from the Mancunian rain and jetted off to the US to record the twelve tracks that make up I See Cathedrals . With influences right through from 60's psychedelia to modern icons Folks have created an album with a perfect mix of sounds. My Mother has everything an opening track needs, a funky base line, cymbal clashes and an easily memorable chorus, it's lively, upbeat and pure fun in it's musical form. Folks aren't afraid to slow things down a bit either, with piano based tracks like The Ship and as melancholy as it's title suggests Where Does the White Go great for listening to on late night drives or if you fancy a little cry. The almost psychedelic Venom is one track that really stands out against the rest on the record, it can only be described as sounding like the smiths but with an instrumental flue solo thrown in.
Folks can begin to make their mark with I See Cathedrals , it's mature for a debut establishing their sound but still leaving room for them to experiment. Okay, so it's not the most original album you've ever heard but every band needs to start somewhere and let's be honest the same stage as Noel Gallagher isn't a bad place to start. There's no doubt that Folks have the talent, all they need now is to make people sit up and listen because if I See Cathedrals is anything to go by the musical womb of Manchester could have yet again produced a band that will grow to do great things.
