Fates Upon Us
It's easy to see how Sheffield Quintet Fates Upon Us have been compared to A Day to Remember, they're big drops, brilliantly brutal vocals, their awesome guitar work and incredible drumming is everything you'd want in a band.
The first track Don't Hate the Player, Hate the Game starts with a big build up which creates this tension between the listener and the artist, it's a case of thinking 'when is this naughty beat going to drop?' and when it finally does the payoff is immense! The screaming is reminiscent of metalcore bands such as Architects and together with an addictive guitar riff creates a truly magnificent first song on this EP.
The second song Have Fun Storming the Castles(awesome title) starts with an old school Linkin Park sound and when the vocals kick in it sounds like a song by Welsh outfit The Blackout. The song takes bits of metal from each genre and moulds them together to create an awesome sound! The chorus is easy to listen to, not easy to memorise and sing along too but after the 100th listen it gets easier. Brilliant tune!
Clearly this is a band who enjoy their Cravendale...or just watch too much TV as their song title If Cats had Opposable Thumbs is clearly taken from that. The action kicks off straight away in this song, the vocals escalate in full force and in no time it's another instant great that you're listening to. The song drops a heavy beat in the middle and then the clear singing vocals make an appearance. The song is five minutes long but at no point does boredom begin to kick in, usually with bands like this if they have a long song it will grow tiresome but this just gets more awesome.
Boys, We've Struck Gold is odd, at first I thought it was a weak song on the EP but after listening a few times I'm quite torn and am now thinking that it's a bit like a rocky metal ballad, a requiem of feelings thrown together and stirred up mixed with metal from all genres to create a beautiful song.
...and so we come to the end of the EP (sadly) and the last song Hobo With A Shotgun/ (these boys are awesome) starts with a metal riff to be envied by any other metal bands and then the screaming vocals kick in and kick this song directly in the balls to turn it into another banging tune! The singing then adds the beautiful essence to it and turns it into a brilliant song, including a massive drop in the middle which would open up pits in any venue across the country!
Fates Upon Us self titled EP is a masterpiece in my eyes, big riffs, big vocals, brilliant singing and incredible drumming combining together to create an amazing sound with metal from all genres and walks of life. Bring on a full album!
