Americana fresh from the heart of NY (North Yorkshire).
It was only by some bizarre twist of fate that a musician like Oliver Catt should emerge from the middle of North Yorkshire. It just doesn't make sense that a sound like that of Fantasy Rainbow should have been born there, such is the heavy stateside influence in its vibe. The scuzzy Americana that roughs up Bos Taurus just sounds like it could have originated from the garage of a beachside condo, not the confines of a Richmond bedroom; but we kinda like it all the more for that reason.
This debut album follows three prior releases - the next chapter in a story that has rapidly progressed from its relatively humble beginnings. From casual tinkerings, Catt has developed Fantasy Rainbow into an outfit that's been snapped up, signed and worked on by a number of prolific figures within the industry. His latest collaboration with Grammy Award Winner Vance Powell's studio has seen this first full offering reach full potential, as well as make it very clear what this project is capable of dropping onto the UK's music scene.
The overwhelming lo-fi tone of the record is one that defines it, and will inevitably get Fantasy Rainbow compared and grouped with the likes of Spectrals, Wavves and Crocodiles. Cool, fresh and with nostalgic dreams of warmer climes; it's an edge especially thrives in tracks like Earwax. While the shape and form may mutate (Nothing But introduces a cheeky nod to afro beat whereas O, Weirdo is undeniably as Americana as a Cadillac ride down Route 66) the mood that dominates Bos Taurus is delightfully chilled. This is a record from a creatively seasoned musician who will no doubt get his name out on the UK's live circuit in no time- and we would particularly look forward to seeing him perform on a hazy summer's evening.
