Fighting The Empires.
Biomechanical first formed in the summer of 2001 but it was not until 2003 that the debut "Eight Moons" was released, followed by amazing performances at Bloodstock Festival. Now they are signed to Earache many gates have been opened for them and they will not be unknown for much longer. Will they be able to successfully follow up their fantastic debut? I think so.
The album begins with some dark sound effects which pave way for this brutal offering. Opening with a track entitled "Enemy Within", this must be one of the most brutal songs ever created, sounding like a mixture of Pantera, Iron Maiden, Queensryche and Judas Priest, you simply cannot go wrong here! Some of you reading this review may be thinking "Oh, it's just another one of those dull Power Metal bands". Believe me; you could not be more wrong. In fact Biomechanical are probably one of the most original bands I have heard in the past five years.
To quote the press release, "Taking metal to dizzying new heights of complexity and brutality in the process" they certainly aren't lying. This album has a piece of everything ranging from industrial influences such as Strapping Young Lad to classic metal like Pantera. Each song is unique in its own way, tracks like "Assaulter" and "Relinquished" are some of the more brutal offerings, whereas a track like "Long Time Dead" is more peaceful, but dark nonetheless.
Twin guitarists, Chris Webb and Jamie Hunt offer a lot to the overall sound of this album, drawing on the influence of Dimebag Darrel, Dave Mustaine, John Petrucci and even Brian May, making for a very complex sound. Lead singer, John K is a superb vocalist who has a very wide range, one minute he can be screaming his lungs out like Phil Anselmo and the next he can be hitting those high notes like Geoff Tate.
In conclusion, Biomechanical are certainly one of the most original metal bands of the century so far, if they get a little more promotion they could go far. A very good album, definitely one of the best of 2005 so far in my opinion.
