An Engaging Enigma
Take the bones of former band Brayford, bolster the ranks by adding another member transforming your four piece into a five piece and proceed to beef up your music with a more hard hitting, adrenaline packed sound and you have Lincolnshire's They Say Fall, a band who with their latest EP could just be on the way to being the find of 2013.
There don't come anymore aptly named titled EP's for a band then Enigma as few bands are harder to decipher than They Say Fall. Whilst the band claim their music to be a mere rock/post hardcore, such a classification does the quintet a major disservice as within each track of Enigma there is so much more going on. With influences ranging from Paramore to Rage Against The Machine, from Frank Turner to Avenged Sevenfold and everything else in between it is not surprising to discover that each of the nine tracks on the EP offer a little taste of everything. As a result you find yourself listening to a song that bristles with fun and exuberance such as with lead single Red Deathwhich for all its dark cynicism is like an in your face taunt to go out and have a good time. It is enriched with vocals that go from melodic to screaming in a blink of an eye and guitars that throw out hook laden riffs before getting head banging inducing heavy. Such a concoction should sound like a mash of cutlery in a washing machine whilst a pneumatic drill screeches in the background, it just shouldn't form a coherent song that you want to listen to again and again but They Say Fall effortlessly tie everything together, crafting a sound that defies genres, that doesn't need a label but simply needs to be turned up loud and enjoyed.
From the heartfelt, tear inducing heartache of Ivy that demands you stop everything and simply listen to the hard hitting Gwoemul that doesn't even feel the need to lure you in with an alluring intro but instead slams you in the face and proceeds to take you on a colossal white knuckle ride, through to the almost pop bounce that resides in the melodic backbone of Poseidon. They Say Fall is far from a boring band churning out a play by numbers EP that is forgotten as soon as the last note is played; this is an EP that you will want to listen to again and again and one that should see the five lads from Lincolnshire gain even more attention.
